Storage Shed Plans – What You Need To Consider BEFORE Parting With Your Cash

It can be totally confusing trying to find the right storage shed plans for your Do-It-Yourself garden project.

Where do you look?  Is the internet the best place or should you buy a book of plans from the local bookstore?  What about buying a ready-made shed?

We would suggest buying your plans (free ones tend to be of lesser-quality) from a reputable and knowledgeable website.  In this way, you strike a balance between cost and an effective, clear set of plans.

Think ahead before deciding on the right shed blueprints:

  • What size of shed do you need?  Be realistic.  How much equipment, junk, tools, etc, do you actually NEED to store?  On paper, it is sometimes hard to visualize the size of the shed, so get out the tape measure, head down the garden and mark out the size of shed you think you’ll need on the ground.  Make a note of your measurements.  What square footage do you actually need?
  • Check out local planning permission/zoning requirements as well.  You don’t want to erect your shed only to find that it contravenes local/national buidling requirements.  Local authorities will need information about the size and design of the shed.  Take this seriously – my neighbor got into deep-water for not complying!  Also, you are probably going to need a building permit (+ fee?), but check as this depends on several factors.
  • Finally, make sure you get your storage shed plans from a website run by somebody with years of woodworking experience.  You will feel more confident if they come from a professional woodworker.  This is where your local shed builder has an advantage; but you will pay considerably more and not have the satisfaction of building it yourself!
